About the Flowers

You know how a tomato purchased from the grocery store in the middle of winter has no flavor? Flowers are no different. Overseas flower producers have perfected the assembly line approach to a year-round supply of identical blooms. In the US, well over a billion dollars worth of cut flowers are sold annually, and only 20% of those are grown in this country. Of those flowers grown in the US, 75% come from California. So that locally grown flower from Maryland? It’s pretty special.

Locally grown flowers have personality; that’s why we name every single one. (Not really, but we’d like to.) Growing from seed allows us to produce some really cool, unique varieties that you don’t see at the grocery store. You’ll likely notice that our flowers have more scent as well. And because they haven’t been flown halfway across the world and are harvested right before they’re sold, they should last longer in the vase.

We don’t use pesticides because they’re harmful to wildlife, and because we and other humans will touch our flowers and display them in our homes. It just makes sense.

About the Farm

The farm takes up less than ⅛ of an acre, making it a micro farm. All of the flowers are grown in Clarksburg, Maryland on a residential lot within a stone’s throw of the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve (not that we would ever throw a stone at it.) With efficient planning and lots of spreadsheets, literally thousands of flowers can be produced from this small space in a season.

About the Flowers

Gemini Flower Farm is owned and run by Sarah, who is, in fact, a Gemini. Ironically, her personality is the exact opposite of every description of the sign you can find on the Internet. Also, every other flower farm name was already taken.

Sarah started her gardening career by growing gigantic, comical zucchini that were named by her coworkers, but no one ever ate. When her kids started refusing the tomatoes and green beans that cost $10 appiece to grow, she switched over to growing flowers. Everyone likes flowers! (Really, have you ever heard anyone say, “If there’s one thing I truly hate, it’s flowers”?) As a former Park Ranger and general outdoor lover, Sarah revels in every moment she can spend outside among her plants.
